Description:
Surgical site infections (SSI) are a major
postoperative concern for all members of the surgical
team. The incidence of postoperative SSIs varies from
facility to facility, from surgeon to surgeon, and more
importantly, from patient to patient. The perioperative
nurse plays a critical role by implementing effective
infection prevention strategies throughout the patient’s
surgical journey. An equally important nursing activity
is assessing individual patient factors that may
increase the patient’s risk of a surgical site
infection and planning appropriate interventions to
reduce the risk. In this educational program, patient
risk factors for SSI and risk reduction
strategies will be addressed.
