Description:

Surgical site infections (SSI) are a major postoperative concern for all members of the surgical team. The incidence of postoperative SSIs varies from facility to facility, from surgeon to surgeon, and more importantly, from patient to patient. The perioperative nurse plays a critical role by implementing effective infection prevention strategies throughout the patient’s surgical journey. An equally important nursing activity is assessing individual patient factors that may increase the patient’s risk of a surgical site infection and planning appropriate interventions to reduce the risk. In this educational program, patient risk factors for SSI and risk reduction strategies will be addressed.

In her current role as Senior Manager, Clinical Education and Accreditation for Kimberly-Clark Health Care, Ms. Stoessel is responsible for the development and presentation of accredited education programs for healthcare professionals. As a member of Kimberly-Clark’s Scientific Affairs and Clinical Education Department, she serves as an internal consultant and is a professional speaker who presents nationally and internationally on clinically related topics. Ms. Stoessel received her Registered Nurse Diploma from St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Huntington, West Virginia; BS in Nursing from Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island; and MS in Education from Memphis State University in Memphis, Tennessee.
