Description:
Unintended hypothermia is associated with adverse outcomes, including an increased rate of surgical site infections (SSIs). Unintended hypothermia can be easily prevented by actively warming patients before surgery. Listen to a national patient advocate address the issue of surgical site infection and learn how actively pre-warming patients can prevent hypothermia and reduce the incidence of SSIs.

Speakers:
Lisa McGiffert directs the Stop Hospital Infections project for Consumers Union, the nonprofit publisher of Consumer Reports. The multi-state project seeks to reduce hospital-acquired infections by raising public awareness and requiring public disclosure of hospital infection rates. McGiffert directs this highly successful campaign that has initiated infection reporting legislation in 43 states, 15 of which now have passed into law. She routinely speaks as the consumer voice on this issue at conferences and with the media. McGiffert serves as a consumer representative on the National Quality Forum Healthcare-associated Infections Steering Committee, the Texas Health Care Associated Infections Advisory Panel, and the California Department of Health Services Healthcare-associated Infections Advisory Working Group. For more than 20 years, as a Senior Policy Analyst for Consumers Union and as legislative coordinator for the Texas Senate Committee on Health and Human Services, McGiffert has worked on a broad array of health care policy issues in Texas and nationally, including health care quality, health insurance, and access to care.

Doreen Wagner, RN, MSN, CNOR, is a nurse educator and international speaker, author, and independent consultant. Working in healthcare for more than 20 years, Wagner's career has encompassed perioperative staff nursing, as well as serving as a surgical services educator, patient safety system coordinator, assistant professor of nursing, and consulting editor on nursing textbooks. Currently, Wagner is on the faculty of North Georgia College and State University while pursuing her doctorate in nursing at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

Wagner is a multi-year honoree in Who's Who Among America's Teachers and a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society. She also holds membership in numerous organizations with heavy volunteer activism in the local and state perspective with the Georgia Nurses Association (GNA) and in the local, state, and national levels of Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN). Wagner is the 2005 recipient of the AORN National Award for Outstanding Perioperative Nursing Research.
